We get to the Mekong Delta by late afternoon. Pat takes us on a walking tour of the Cu Chi tunnels, demonstrating with glee how various booby traps and devices snapped American bodies in half. (Didn't he fight on our side?) Pat asks if anyone wants to try stepping onto a pile of leaves and plummeting into the shark-toothed trap below, to "feel what it's like, but in a safe, fun way." I look over to Seth to see if he's even remotely interested or offended. Neither. He's making karate chop moves to himself by a nearby tree.

After three exciting hours of group oohing and aahing, Pat reveals to us that the tunnels and booby traps we've just seen are re-creations of the original ones, built for tourist purposes. This confession causes great disappointment and annoyance among the group, who'd prefer not to know they schlepped across the globe to see some replicas. Pat is confused by the negative energy now emanating his way and I make an effort to explain to him the value of authenticity, commending his honesty but pointing out that it's bad for business.

The ride to Danang is tainted with cynicism and grumpiness. In an attempt to lift spirits, the Oslo Girls have embarked on a Bjork singathon. But their cracked voices and fuzzy legs are not enough to pep up the group.
